How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Intense Pulse Light (abbreviated IPL) describes the use of intense pulses of non-coherent light distributed over a range of wavelengths; from 400nm to 1200nm. The technology utilizes specific wavelength ranges to target various chromophores in the skin. This enables effective treatment of a broad spectrum of conditions, including vascular and pigmented lesions, skin photoaging treatments and hair removal.

Laser therapy most often relies on heat to create microscopic cellular damage. Heat destroys targeted cells, closes off blood vessels, breaks up pigmentation, and softens scar tissue. For example, body contouring uses heat to permanently destroy a portion of targeted fat cells. Laser hair removal uses heat to damage targeted hair follicles.

How will I look after my treatment?

Some patients may leave their appointments with slightly rosy, warm skin, and in some cases irritated bumpy skin. These symptoms pass on their own within a few hours.

  • Avoid irritant topical agents (AHA, BHA, Hydroquinone, Retinol) for 3-4 days prior to treatment.
  • Discontinue all blood thinners 7-10 days prior to treatment.
  • Ensure that the treatment area is shaved 1 day prior to treatment. If irritations/cuts from shaving are present, they must subside before progressing to treatment.
  • If a patient has a history of Herpes Simplex, the patient will be prescribed oral antiviral medication.

  • Mild erythema and skin sensitivity may occur up to 7 days.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 3-4 weeks.
  • Gentle moisturizers and sunblock must be applied daily.
  • Avoid using hot showers/baths/saunas for the first 3 days after treatment. Avoid exercise for the first 24 hours.
  • Consistently show up for your scheduled appointment, 4-6 weeks apart
