Intense Pulse Light

IPL treatment

What Is Intense Pulse Light?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target various skin concerns. IPL therapy delivers high-intensity pulses of light to the skin, which are absorbed by the skin’s pigment and blood vessels to treat a range of aesthetic issues. Unlike lasers, which emit a single wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to treat different layers of the skin

How Does It Work?

  • Broad Spectrum Light: IPL devices emit light in a broad spectrum, targeting specific chromophores (pigments) in the skin, including melanin (brown pigment), hemoglobin (red pigment), and water.
  • Thermal Energy: The light is absorbed by these pigments and converted into heat, which helps to break down unwanted pigmentation (e.g., age spots, sun spots) and vascular issues (e.g., broken capillaries, redness).
  • Collagen Stimulation: The light also stimulates collagen production in the skin, improving texture, tone, and elasticity.

What To Expect?

A consultation with a dermatologist or licensed technician will determine if IPL is suitable for your skin type and condition.

Skin Preparation: The skin will be cleaned, and protective goggles will be worn to shield your eyes from the light. Sometimes a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize disco comfort.

No Sun Exposure: You may be advised to avoid sun exposure or tanning for a period before the treatment. Skin should be free of recent sunburn.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

IPL for acne scars is a gentle, non-invasive option that helps improve skin tone, reduce pigmentation, and stimulate collagen production for smoother skin. However, it is most effective for mild to moderate scarring, and multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for melasma, a skin condition characterized by dark, discolored patches, often on the face, particularly the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. IPL can help reduce the appearance of these patches by targeting the pigment and improving skin tone.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a highly effective treatment for redness and rosacea, a common skin condition that causes persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes pustules or bumps. IPL can help reduce the appearance of redness and other vascular concerns by targeting the blood vessels beneath the skin and promoting overall skin tone improvement

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a popular and effective treatment for hyperpigmentation, which includes conditions like age spots, sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots left after acne or injury). IPL works by targeting excess pigment in the skin and helping to even out skin tone.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for sunspots, also known as age spots or liver spots, which are darkened areas of skin caused by prolonged sun exposure. IPL targets these pigmented spots and helps lighten them, resulting in a more even skin tone.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for freckles, which are small, pigmented spots on the skin caused by sun exposure or genetics. IPL targets the melanin (pigment) in freckles and helps reduce their appearance, resulting in a more even skin tone.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive treatment that can help improve the appearance of enlarged pores by promoting overall skin health and addressing factors that contribute to pore enlargement, such as excess oil production, skin texture irregularities, and pigmentation.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for improving uneven skin tone and texture. It works by targeting multiple skin concerns such as pigmentation irregularities, fine lines, and rough skin, all of which can contribute to an uneven complexion.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for brown spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, age spots, sunspots, or liver spots. These spots are usually caused by excess melanin production due to sun exposure or aging. IPL can help lighten and reduce the appearance of these brown spots, providing a more even skin tone.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for broken blood vessels, also known as telangiectasia or spider veins. These are small, dilated blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin, often causing redness, visible veins, or a flushed appearance. IPL works by targeting these blood vessels and reducing their visibility.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

Preparing for your Photofractional treatment is crucial for achieving the best possible results while minimizing any potential side effects. Follow these pre-treatment guidelines to ensure a smooth experience:

To reduce the risk of bruising, it’s best to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, ginseng, and other blood-thinning supplements for 7-10 days before your appointment. Consult with your physician if you’re on any prescribed medication that might need adjustment prior to the session.

Refrain from consuming alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your treatment. Alcohol can increase the likelihood of bruising and swelling at the injection sites.

Avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids, glycolic acid, or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) in the treatment area for 3-4 days prior to your session. These products can make the skin more sensitive and may increase the risk of irritation.

While Botox / Dysport requires minimal downtime, some patients may experience temporary redness or minor bruising. Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks before any special events to allow time for the full results to develop.

Hydrating well before your appointment helps keep your skin in top condition. Eating a light meal before your session can also help reduce the chances of feeling lightheaded or faint during the treatment.

Let your clinician know about any medical conditions, medications, or past cosmetic treatments during your consultation. If you have a history of cold sores, an antiviral medication may be recommended as a precaution.

Aftercare

After your IPL session, following these aftercare instructions can help you achieve the best possible results and reduce any potential side effects:

Refrain from touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours.

It’s recommended to remain upright for at least 4 hours after your treatment to prevent the product from shifting away from the targeted areas. Avoid activities like lying down, bending over, or performing inverted yoga poses.

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot yoga, or heavy lifting for 24 hours after your session. Increased blood flow from these activities can potentially spread the injected material, reducing the effectiveness of the treatment.

If you experience mild swelling or bruising, apply a cold compress to the treated area. This can help minimize swelling and reduce any discomfort. Be sure not to press down hard when applying the compress.

Stay away from hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs for 24 hours post-treatment. Excessive heat can increase the risk of bruising and swelling.

Similar to the pre-treatment phase, avoiding alcohol after your session helps prevent bruising and swelling. This will support a smoother recovery process and better results.

You will begin to see the initial effects of your treatment in 2-7 days, with the full results becoming visible at around 14 days. The gradual onset allows for a more natural-looking transformation as the muscles relax over time.

To maintain your smooth, refreshed look, schedule maintenance sessions every 3-4 months. Consistency helps in keeping wrinkles at bay and ensures your skin retains its youthful appearance.
