What Is Photofractional?

Photofractional is a comprehensive skin rejuvenation treatment that combines Intense Pulse Light (IPL) with Lumenis® ResurFX™. This dual-therapy approach offers maximum results by addressing a range of skin concerns in a single session.

How Does It Work?

The IPL component targets pigmentation and vascular issues, while ResurFX promotes collagen production and improves skin texture. Together, they help achieve brighter, smoother, and more youthful skin with a series of sessions.

What To Expect?

  • Fractional Laser: This component creates micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting healing without affecting the surrounding tissue. This helps in reducing wrinkles and improving skin firmness.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): IPL utilizes broad-spectrum light to treat pigmentation, redness, and vascular lesions. It rejuvenates the skin, resulting in a more radiant and youthful complexion.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Photofractional™ is highly effective for treating skin damaged by the sun, including sun spots, age spots, freckles, and uneven skin tone. The IPL component targets and reduces excess melanin, helping to fade dark spots and promote a more even complexion.

The fractional resurfacing component improves the texture of the skin by encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin. This can reduce the appearance of rough or bumpy skin, leaving it softer and smoother.

Combining IPL and fractional resurfacing in one treatment offers comprehensive skin rejuvenation, addressing both texture and tone in a single session.

As Photofractional™ promotes collagen production and enhances skin texture, it can help refresh and revitalize dull, tired-looking skin, giving it a more radiant, youthful glow.

The fractional resurfacing laser is great for treating acne scars by promoting collagen remodeling. This helps reduce the appearance of scars and uneven texture, giving the skin a smoother, more uniform appearance.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

Preparing for your Photofractional treatment is crucial for achieving the best possible results while minimizing any potential side effects. Follow these pre-treatment guidelines to ensure a smooth experience:

To reduce the risk of bruising, it’s best to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, ginseng, and other blood-thinning supplements for 7-10 days before your appointment. Consult with your physician if you’re on any prescribed medication that might need adjustment prior to the session.

Refrain from consuming alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your treatment. Alcohol can increase the likelihood of bruising and swelling at the injection sites.

Avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids, glycolic acid, or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) in the treatment area for 3-4 days prior to your session. These products can make the skin more sensitive and may increase the risk of irritation.

While Botox / Dysport requires minimal downtime, some patients may experience temporary redness or minor bruising. Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks before any special events to allow time for the full results to develop.

Hydrating well before your appointment helps keep your skin in top condition. Eating a light meal before your session can also help reduce the chances of feeling lightheaded or faint during the treatment.

Let your clinician know about any medical conditions, medications, or past cosmetic treatments during your consultation. If you have a history of cold sores, an antiviral medication may be recommended as a precaution.

Aftercare

After your Photofractional session, following these aftercare instructions can help you achieve the best possible results and reduce any potential side effects:

Refrain from touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours.

It’s recommended to remain upright for at least 4 hours after your treatment to prevent the product from shifting away from the targeted areas. Avoid activities like lying down, bending over, or performing inverted yoga poses.

Avoid strenuous exercise, hot yoga, or heavy lifting for 24 hours after your session. Increased blood flow from these activities can potentially spread the injected material, reducing the effectiveness of the treatment.

If you experience mild swelling or bruising, apply a cold compress to the treated area. This can help minimize swelling and reduce any discomfort. Be sure not to press down hard when applying the compress.

Stay away from hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs for 24 hours post-treatment. Excessive heat can increase the risk of bruising and swelling.

Similar to the pre-treatment phase, avoiding alcohol after your session helps prevent bruising and swelling. This will support a smoother recovery process and better results.

You will begin to see the initial effects of your treatment in 2-7 days, with the full results becoming visible at around 14 days. The gradual onset allows for a more natural-looking transformation as the muscles relax over time.

To maintain your smooth, refreshed look, schedule maintenance sessions every 3-4 months. Consistency helps in keeping wrinkles at bay and ensures your skin retains its youthful appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Photofractional is a combination of two advanced technologies: fractional laser and intense pulsed light (IPL). It targets pigmentation, redness, and skin texture issues, improving skin tone, reducing sun damage, and stimulating collagen production.

The treatment is generally well-tolerated, with mild discomfort described as a warming or tingling sensation. Numbing cream can be applied to minimize any discomfort during the procedure.

A typical session lasts between 30-60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Larger areas or multiple concerns may take longer.

Results include smoother skin texture, a more even skin tone, and reduced pigmentation or redness. You can expect a noticeable improvement in skin texture and radiance within a few weeks, with continued improvement over time.

For optimal results, 3-5 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart are usually recommended, depending on your skin condition. Maintenance sessions may be required to keep the results.

Side effects are usually mild and temporary, such as redness, swelling, or slight bruising. Rare risks include hyperpigmentation or scarring, but these are uncommon when performed by an experienced practitioner.
